The Olympics 2024 are having a fashion moment.

When it came to the design of the Australian 2024 Olympic team uniforms, fashion was at the forefront, with the city of Paris as the inspiration behind the design.

To capture the unmistakable essence of Paris, detailed linework was used, influenced by iconic monuments such as the Eiffel Tower and Le Louvre. This is beautifully showcased in the woman’s pleated skirt and the taping detail in the belt, shirt, and shorts.

With the use of soft, breathable fabrics, the Olympic team’s comfort was as much a priority as the standout style. Designer Sonia Vizza explains, “The fabrication we have used for the shorts and tops has stretch in them, which will offer the athletes comfort and flexibility across multiple body shapes.”

Regarding the fabrics chosen, which include a lightweight European linen, inspiration was drawn from the relaxed, luxe style of the South of France - ideal for the Parisian weather. Sonia says, “We wanted to include as many natural and breathable fibres as possible, so athletes are as comfortable in the summer heat in Paris.”

Sonia goes on to explain, “This is also the first time we have used Australian-grown cotton in the designs to help support our cotton farming industry here in Australia.”

The colour palette is a nod to the spirit of Australia, using a mix of colours to add impact, including yellow and mint for the linen shirts. A green hue has been selected in the signature blazers paired with the gold buttons - an ode to the traditional baggy green blazer of past designs.

To pay respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, this is the first Olympic Opening and Closing uniform where indigenous artwork has been incorporated into the designs. “This is showcased in the beautiful scarf in the women’s uniform and the pocket square in the men’s blazer,” adds Sonia.

And proving that it’s always about the fashion, athletes have been offered several different ways they can style their uniform, so that they can add their very own personal touch to it.
